    Reliability-Centered Maintenance

    The term “reliability-centered maintenance” (RCM) was coined by United Airlines to describe the process used to determine the optimum maintenance requirements for aircraft.

    RCM program implementation optimizes maintenance resources and operations in the plant to maximize productivity while minimizing costs through cost-effective maintenance techniques.

    Today RCM is defined in the standard SAE JA1011, Evaluation Criteria for Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) Processes. Numerous studies and reports have detailed substantial maintenance cost reductions, some as high as 40%, by implementing proactive and predictive RCM programs and strategies.
